Carly Simon Hints at Who Is "So Vain"

In an interview with Uncut magazine, Simon, 64, says a remastered version of the track reveals "the answer."
"I'm just going to tell you this," the singer said. "The answer is on the new version of You're So Vain. There's a little whisper — and it's the answer to the puzzle." But that "whisper" can be heard only by playing the track backward. The name whispered: "David." (Listen to the clip here.)
The New York Post mentioned and eliminated musicians David Cassidy and David Bowie. Britain's The Sun was the first to claim it's Geffen. Simon supposedly resented the attention Geffen, now 67, lavished on promoting her folk music rival Joni Mitchell.

This is an awesome twist to what I and millions of others thought was some sort of lovers' quarrel, when in actuality, it would appear to be friendship and business rivalry. And it makes perfect sense: He loved, nurtured and lavished attention on her when she was the "next big thing," only to leave her and do the same for Joni Mitchell. That's enough to make anyone bitter and angry.
In actuality, this failed relationship ended up being quite different than anything any of us had probably ever thought of. Great twist!
